Isentropic, a highly innovative UK cleantech start-up company specialising in energy storage and recovery technology, has relocated from Cambridge to Segensworth in Hampshire.
“The move was prompted by the need to recruit staff,” explains Jonathan Howes, Isentropic’s Technical Director. “We’re actively seeking to recruit highly skilled mechanical engineers, who combine analytical and creative capabilities. We’re aware that there is a high concentration of high quality mechanical engineers on the South Coast, so it made financial sense to move the company to Hampshire for the skill sets we need.”
The company has developed its revolutionary Pumped Heat Electricity Storage (PHES) technology, which it describes as having the potential to enable the widespread use of energy from renewable sources. It is now developing a utility-scale demonstration plant and will be increasing staff levels in support of this project.
Howes says that Isentropic’s PHES technology has the potential to dominate the large-scale electrical storage market as it offers a cost-effective and efficient solution to the intermittency problems of renewable energy sources. The technology has no geographical constraints, is compact, can demonstrate a round trip efficiency of 72% to 80% and has the lowest costs of any storage technology.
The technology has the ability to make better use of existing generating capacity to cope with demand at peak times. By being able to store the excess capacity at night and feed it into the grid during the day, rather than switching on inefficient peaking plants as happens at present, it is possible to use the stored excess to meet the periods of peak demand.
